Green Building – Green Building Certification System
Nowadays, there are systems existing and being evaluated that assess buildings according to their impacts on environment. These systems are important tools in the green transformation period as well as happening to be the very first step.
There are many green building certification systems around the world. The main ones are BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) – originated in 1990s in UK, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) – originated in 1998 in USA, IISBE (International Initiative for Sustainable Built Environment) – established in 1998 by the union of developed countries, Greenstar – generated and adapted from BREEAM in 2003 in Australia, CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment for Building Environmental Efficiency) – originated in 2004 in Japan, DNGB (Deutsche Gessellschaft fur Nachhaltiges Bauen) – originated in 2009 in Germany.
Turkish Green Building Association's Building Code and Certification Committee has been following the national and international progresses on this subject and has started its own studies in order to form a nationally appropriate Certification System to fill in an important gap in our country with the incorporation of experts.
